The latest blockbuster from Apple TV Plus is ghostA spy comedy starring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. Despite pushing these two stars over the legal limit for how much charisma a single movie should be allowed to have, it wasn’t well received, reaching a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Yes, I got a 64% more favorable score from the crowd, but that could just be de Armas stans (they’re so fierce).
Since it likely won’t join the ranks of the best Apple TV Plus movies, we’d suggest skipping it for something a lot more slam-dunk — so here are six comedies with secret agents that we think are definitely worth your time, many of which are available on the best streaming services.
Some are more comedic than others, I admit – but at the very least, they’re fun international adventures. One is Mission: Impossible, for example – I chose the most fun movie, but they’re all worth rewatching now, with dead reckoning Coming soon, available on Paramount Plus.
spy
Where to watch: Rent (US), Disney Plus (UK)
I unabashedly love this movie about a super-tactful spy sound analyzer who goes into the field to avenge his death. It’s absolutely stunning, with Melissa McCarthy – not quite a low-energy actress – as the most real person in it. Jude Law plays the world’s coolest and most infuriating spy, Rose Byrne plays the world’s coolest psychopath, Jason Statham plays a parody of his characters, and it also features Allison Janney, Peter Serafinowicz, Bobby Cannavale, and Miranda Hart knocking it out of the park. .

The man from Uncle
Where to watch: HBO Max (US), Rent (UK)
Not strictly a comedy, but being a Guy Ritchie movie, dry wit is woven from start to finish. It’s the classiest movie here by a wide margin, full of people staying cool in tense situations, edgy ’60s costumes, gorgeous European locations, and one-liners. The story revolves around spies for the United States and Russia who must cooperate during the Cold War to stop the nuclear threat. Henry Cavill steals the movie, and it was a great early showing for Alicia Vikander and Elizabeth Debicki. Armie Hammer is also in it, and it’s pretty good, though some people might be (somewhat) put off these days.

Austin Powers
Where to watch: Rent (US), Netflix and ITVX (UK)
Do you know of any ’90s comedy that has aged well (appropriately enough)? Austin Powers! There are plenty of great little jokes other than the big ones everyone remembers (my favorite is Austen’s ingrained assumption about who won the Cold War), and even fonder James Bond references than you might think. It’s also the perfect balance between being serious and honest – he actually loves Austin as a character even when he’s annoying everyone else, which makes you root for him to find his way in the new world.
Available to rent from most US streaming stores. Available to stream on Netflix or ITVX for free in the UK.
The man who knew very little
Where to watch: Starz (US), Prime Video (UK)
If you like your laughs on the farce side, this is the whole old comedy of mistaken identity. Bill Murray is nice but, shall we say, Basic A man who travels to the UK to visit his brother. Saeed’s brother buys him an “interactive theatre” experience where he will be the center of an apparent international espionage plot. Except he accidentally becomes the center of an actual spy plot, and he has no idea. It’s not a classic, but it exudes the charm of Bill Murray for all it’s worth, and there’s a moment with an elderly couple in a hotel that falls into my top 10 comedy moments of all time (for me).
Available to stream on Starz in the United States. Available to stream on Prime Video in the UK.
True lies
Where to watch: AMC Plus (US), Disney Plus (UK)
Speaking of the farce, it seems like this movie was based on a French farce movie, with the whole James Cameron movie being put on top, which is why it has a really weird plot “you trick your wife on a fake sex spy mission” and then she also has to show me with Harrier plane to save his daughter. Gender politics haven’t quite progressed, but there are plenty of fun scenes, from Bill Paxton’s miserable pick-up artist, to Jamie Lee Curtis blowing Arnie’s cap, to Arnie’s whole deal when he’s under truth serum.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol
Where to watch: Paramount Plus (US and UK)
Another movie that’s more of a straightforward spy thriller, but perhaps the lightest and most fun of the Mission: Impossible films, due to it being from the director of The Incredibles and starring Simon Pegg heavily, specifically to bring comic relief. From opening the uncooperative prison to the infamous (real) climb atop the Burj Khalifa, it’s just a blast. Don’t worry about the plot about stealing a nuclear device or something, who cares.
