Now in its fourth year of publication, this report identifies trends in testing, automation rates, and testing concerns and priorities for 2023 by surveying hundreds of DevOps professionals across industries.

Teams are facing the growing need to showcase the return on investment in test automation

Among the many insights gleaned from the report, one of the most notable was the struggle with the lack of available resources to implement appropriate testing best practices into their testing strategies.

“In today’s economic climate, showcasing the benefits of test automation is more important than ever,” says Stephen Filoni, Vice President of Product Management. “By highlighting metrics such as reduced costs of manual testing, developer productivity gains, and reduced leaked defects, test teams can show how automation increases testing speed and improves the overall quality of the application.”

Test coverage is increasingly becoming a priority

Even more so than the 2022 report, this year’s results show that making strategic decisions about test coverage based on users, their location, device trends, and the team’s comfort with risk is at the forefront of test planning.

“It is essential for organizations to keep up with the latest changes in the market, such as the latest iOS and Android releases,” says Filoni. “Customers adopt the latest hardware very quickly. The right test lab can assure teams that they have same-day support for the latest OS and device versions.”

Key findings from the 2023 State of Test Automation report

  • More teams lack the automation resources needed to implement best practice testing. Managers, practitioners, and agile teams must prioritize measuring the positive impact of test automation on the entire organization.
  • Improving test coverage is increasingly a priority in software testing. Ensuring that the testing strategy covers as much space as possible is an increasing focus for teams.
  • Teams continue to focus on non-functional testing. In 2023, organizations are looking to expand non-functional testing, focusing on API, performance, and application security.
  • Teams are embracing low code/no code solutions in 2023. Teams are investing in solutions the whole team can use regardless of skill set.
